El Niño & Global Warming are kicking my ass

If there is something I can usually brag about is the perfect weather around here. Caracas is near the Caribbean coast but located at 1Km above sea level, which means sunny days at temps a bit cooler than those found on the beaches. Rarely rains, winds aren’t something to worry about, and it’s like that during the whole year. Yeah, I’m spoiled when it comes to weather. To make it better we have a mountain called ‘El Avila’ to the north of the city, which makes the city look really green and is a great escape if you wanna go hiking or biking. Honestly, It’s the perfect place to live if you only consider the weather. The picture above is how the city looks, every day.

That is until this year when between El Niño and Global Warming we’ve reached record high temps and we’re going through a long period without rain. To make things worst El Niño brought a huge cloud of ‘Calima’, which is like a huge smog cloud covering the whole country that is making the temps go even higher. What’s the consequence of all this? Fire!!!

El Avila has been burning for the last 2 weeks!!! Caracas is now covered with smoke to the point where you can’t see the sky. The city went from looking like in the picture above to this (those are not clouds, that’s smoke!):

Because of this I’ve barely been able to get any training done for the last week, going out for a run feels awful for my lungs and throat and after a few minutes outside even my eyes start itching. I was able to go swimming and do some indoor training on the gym, but nothing outside. The worst thing is that we’re not expecting rain in the next 2 weeks, so I’m gonna have to spend a long time on the gym this week.

Wow, those are some amazing pictures. I really don’t think it’s healthy for you to be out in that, let alone try to run in it. Wow. that looks worse than LA on a really smoggy day!

Really liking this new format for your blog. Once I figured out how to get to your posts, it’s very cool!
