Back from Vacations

I’m finally back from vacations. After 1 week in Vegas and another week in a cruise on the Caribbean I feel like new. I got a chance to clear my mind from everything that was going on last year and give myself a chance to view everything from a different perspective.

Vacations were awesome. I got myself new running shoes (Asics Kayano 15) the day I arrived to Vegas and put them to use the next day. I ran every morning on the Strip. I loved that I could do back to back routes instead of doing loops, I would just go out and run 20 or 25 minutes in one direction, then cross the street and come back, I don’t get the chance to run like that here. The only day I didn’t run while in Vegas was when we did a road-trip to the Grand Canyon, which was amazing! The views there are breathtaking, I had never seen something like that before.

Then I went on the Cruise where I also had a chance to run. It had a track for runners with view to the ocean that was great. I woke up extra early a couple of days to be able to run with the sunrise. It was amazing.

I still haven’t planned the races I want to do for this year or set up my fit-goals. I’m getting up to date with everything back at home and will get to that during this week because I want to start my training plan next week. I’ll keep you updated as soon as I decide my what/where I’m racing this year.

Coming back to life

Hi Readers, Happy New Year!! I hope you had a wonderful holidays. I haven’t posted in a long time, first because of the knee injury that made it impossible to train for the Marathon I was planning to run on December and after that, when it was healed, all the other races of the year were sold out, so I was low on motivation to run much without upcoming races, and with motivation to run being low, my motivation to write was even lower… sorry.

But something else happened that kept me away from blogging, it has a bit more to do with my personal life and with the situation where I live. I don’t normally talk about these things on the blog but I feel that if I don’t do it now I wont be able to close the chapter and start the new year as I should. Also, I would like to share with you how things are somewhere else in the world. So here it goes:

I was born on the US, but most of my family lives in Venezuela (South America) and I’ve been here most of my life. It’s a beautiful country with wonderful people (and absolutely perfect weather the whole year), but sadly on the last few years we’ve been on a constant political turmoil. Each day the government is slipping farther away from a democracy and we are getting closer to being under a dictatorship (or maybe we already are). My family’s first income is a ranch my grandfather bought 30 years ago. One of my uncle’s studied agronomy so my grandfather bought it as a family business he could work in, it’s the only place where my uncle has worked in, and it also helps support all of our family.

Almost six weeks ago the government went to my uncle and said that they were taking the ranch from us, that we had 8 days to get out and that we couldn’t take anything from it. They are claiming they are taking it to ‘recover it’, to ‘give it back to the people’, because according to them the land is not ours, they say that we stole it! Even when we have the documents of property dating back from 1817, when the government back then sold the land to some dude, and that dude to someone else, and that one to someone else… until my grandfather bought it.

They claim other reasons, I wont (and can’t) get into details here, but the end of it is that they are stealing it from us. It’s a productive ranch that makes good money and it’s in great conditions, so they want it for them. We are not the first ones going through something like this, we have talked with lawyers and they say all this is completely illegal, but where do you go when it’s your own government the one that’s stealing from you? In the end there’s absolutely nothing we can do, we just have been trying to stall the process so we can save as much as we can, try to at least sell the animals and the machinery in there, because we know they are taking the land and not giving us anything in exchange.

So as you can guess, this has been keeping me with very little motivation, it’s the work of a lifetime that’s being taken from us. All my family’s savings are invested there, my uncle has been working there for 30 years, he has a family to support too, and we are being left with nothing…

That said, I guess you can understand why I’ve been away from blogland lately. But today is the first day of a new year, that means a new running season is about to start and running is one of the things that makes me happy. So I’m going to start running with a purpose again, and since I’m running, I will have more to blog about so expect to see more of me around here (and around your blogs too).

I still haven’t planned this season, don’t know what races I want to run or what I want my goals to be. I am going on vacations (plane leaves in 5 hours!) to Vegas and then on a Cruise for a week. It’s a trip we planned since January last year and already payed for everything, so no reason not to go. I’m hoping that when I come back my head will be clearer and I will have a plan for this running season. So until then.

A good one and a bad one

I have 2 news, a good one and a bad one. Good news is I broke my 5k PR, I went to the Treadmill, warmed up, got ready and went as fast as I could for 5k. Took me 21 minutes 45 seconds to complete the distance. A time I’m proud of, since when I started running doing a sub 30 5k seemed impossible.

There’s a marathon on Caracas on December 13th, and the plan was to train using the FIRST plan using as a reference a 22 min 5k time, It’s slower than my new-and-shiny PR, but since I did that PR on a treadmill (which is flat and easier) I will add 15 seconds to it. Also, all the pace calculators put me around a 3:35 marathon with that 5k time, which seems crazy to me, my goal right now is just to go sub 4, maybe  sub 3:55 if I have a good day, but those times still sound crazy to me, no matter what the pace calculator say!!!

Now to the bad news. Since the San Francisco Marathon each time I ran my right knee was bothering me, I was running short distances because I wanted to give my body some time to recover. I started training for the Caracas Marathon 2 weeks ago and on my first long run, which was supposed to be a 13 mile run, my knee was hurting REALLY bad. I couldn’t complete the distance because of the pain and was able to run only 10 miles. Also I did that run on a beach house where I was that weekend with some friends and on the afternoon I had to drive 5 and a half hours to Caracas, which made the pain even worst. Since that day I can’t walk without feeling pain on my right knee, it hurts when I put weight on it.

I made a doctors appointment for this friday, is the sooner I could get into one since all the doctors seem to be on vacations right now!! A physiotherapist saw me and she said that it seems like its the tendon that goes from the quadriceps to the knee. I guess they are going to order me to rest, take some pills and maybe go to physiotherapy and that I’m going to be off for some time, I’m just hoping it’s nothing too serious that requires surgery…

So my marathon plans are gone, and probably most of my training goals for the rest of the year. This is the reason why I have been MIA from the blogs  and tweeter, its been depressing and I didn’t want to know anything about training, but I will try to get back to it this week.I also need to find a way to work out, at least a little. I can’t go to the gym because that would require me to walk from machine to machine and that’s not a good idea right now, I’ll ask the doctor if I can swim, or maybe in a couple of weeks I could get go for a bike ride.

My First Marathon, Race Report

Here it comes, a few days later than expected, my race report for the 2009 San Francisco Marathon, my first Marathon:

As I mentioned in a previous post, I was staying in San Fran with a friend that lives there. The day before the race I bought a small Croissant, a Power Bar and a Gatorade to eat for breakfast on Race Day. That was the best I could find as I didn’t want to cook anything that day. My pre-race morning went without any eventualities, woke up, took a shower, ate breakfast and my friend (who was super nice to wake up that early) took me to Embarcadero, where the marathon was going to start.

When I got there I was so excited that I couldn’t think. I had to ask some random lady how to attach the chip to my shoe, it was different from the ones I’ve used before. Even though it came instructions, I just couldn’t concentrate to read and follow a 3-step instruction process. After this I thought about going to a porta-potty, but the lines were too long. So I just walked aimlessly until my wave was called. I crossed the starting line at 6:07:35 am.

It was really cold and I was just warming up for the first few miles, so I was going sloooooow. At the second mile something really funny/amazing happened. The sign announcing that we had reached mile 2 was facing the other way, and at this time an old man (he looked to be on his 80’s) caught up to me and said:

“Hey! I think we’re going the wrong way, look at that sign!”

me: “Yeah, the finish line is behind us, we’re going the wrong way!”

him: “Well, I gotta let the guys ahead of us know they’re going the wrong way!”

And he sped off, leaving me behind. Never saw him again. I wanna be like him when I’m that old.

At mile 5 we arrived to the hill leading up to the Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio Hill. Everyone that talked about a hill on the expo or early in the marathon will mention the Presidio Hill as something horrible, almost with fear in their voices. If this was a Harry Potter book, it would be ‘The Hill that must not be named’. And indeed, climbing up that thing was HARD. It was a long steep hill, where a lot of people started walking. But I didn’t walk, I was able to run through it.

There were some trivia-like posters every 100 feet or so during that hill, they read something like this:

“Do you know what’s the steepest hill in San Francisco” – After reading this, some of the people around me started saying “Of course!, THIS ONE!”

Next sign said it was another hill, somewhere else in San Francisco, but another question followed:

“Do you know what’s the second steepest hill in San Francisco” – Now everyone around me was saying “Yeah! this one, you don’t have to rub it on our faces!!”

But again, we were wrong as the next sign said it was somewhere else in the city. Then another sign said that those hills have a 31% inclination degree. And right at the end of ‘the hill that must not be named’ was a last sign, that read:

“Aren’t you glad you just finished going up this hill and not one of those two?” – Everyone around me just started laughing as we read that.

It was a huge relief to have finished with that (horrible!) hill and to see what we had ahead of us. We were just entering the Golden Gate Bridge.

Below are 3 pics, the first one is before starting the race, with the Bay Bridge behind me, the second one is the start of the Presidio Hill (the horrible part of the hill starts when you make that turn to the left) and the last pic is when we entered the Golden Gate Bridge, although you can’t see the brdige becaue of the fog. But you can read the extremely cool sign: “Runners on Bridge”

Crossing the Golden Gate was a great experience, and harder than I thought. That was the coldest part of the race, we were facing really cold winds as we crossed it. At the beginning I was amazed just to be running on the bridge, but after a while I just wanted to get through it! At the end of the bridge was a water station that had Gu, I took a couple and went to the porta-potty. After that it was time to cross the bridge again and go back to San Fran. This was the only part of the race when I went anaerobic and ran way faster than my marathon pace, I just didn’t want to deal with the winds anymore. Here are a couple of pics from the bridge:

After crossing the bridge everything got a lot easier, temps started to raise and we entered the Golden Gate Park, a beautiful place to run in. We were in the Park for a long time, from mile 12.5 to mile 19. I was just enjoying myself there, chatting with people and taking it easy, just having fun.

Between mile 15 and mile 20 the course was a slow continuous uphill. It wasn’t hard or steep, but it was always going up.

I was relieved when I reached Height & Ashbury at mile 20, that meant that the hills were over. According to my friend that is the hippie county in San Fran, and of course, they were giving beer at the water station. My first thought when I heard a guy announcing “Cytomax, Water aaaaand BEEEEEERRR!” was ‘who he hell drinks beer while running a marathon???’. But then I told to myself that I was there to have fun, so I joined the party and had 2 shots. BOOYA!.

Height & Ashbury was also crowded by spectators and people cheering, it was AWESOME to be running there. There were lots of people on the sides cheering for us and even on the balcony’s of some houses there was people cheering. That part of the Marathon was great.

The good thing about going uphill for 5 miles is that then you have to go downhill, right? Well… i don’t think that applies to running, at least going uphill won’t destroy your knees/quads. After mile 20 there were some really steep downhills, from mile 21.5 the rest of the course was mostly flat, that’s how steep those downhills were. And when I reached that point my knees where hurting a bit and my quads were KILLING me. That’s when the hard part of the race started.

From mile 22 to 24(ish) we were in a more industrial part of the city, which meant no spectators, no people cheering, noone there except for the volunteers at the intersections and water stations. On this part they were also changing the route between 2 parallel streets to allow cars to go through and not paralyze the whole city because of the marathon, so every 10 minutes or so they would send the runners to one street or another in a intersection. I got cut in one of these intersections where they opened a street for runners right ahead of me (instead of making me turn left where everyone else in front of me was going). So there I was, with a guy running in front of me and everyone else behind me, the street cleared for us. I sped up, passed the guy, and started yelling “I’m WINNING, I’m WINNING!!!” it was hilarious!

But after a while it got pretty lonely out there. The weather had changed from cold and foggy to hot and warm. To the point that I ended taking my shirt off. These last miles where hard for everyone. I passed a woman around mile 23, she looked to be in a lot of pain, so I smiled at her and said “let’s go! we’re almost there!” trying to cheer her up, she answered “SHUT UP!”, I was like ‘…oooook’ turned around and kept going minding my own businesses.

I got a second wind for the last 2 miles, we had reached the coast and there were more spectators again. There were also live bands playing on corners, which was really cool. I’m a huge Pink Floyd fan and at one point there was a band playing ‘Run Like Hell’, that was one of the coolest thing ever for me at that point.

For the last mile I just focused on getting to the finish line, I forgot about the pain and just ran with all that I had left. Here are some pics from that last effort.

Then, when I reached the finish line, I walked. I had decided to follow everyone’s advice and just have fun during the race. I didn’t take my iPod with me, I didn’t take my Garmin, I had been having fun the whole day and I had done such a huge effort to go to San Fran and to get to that Finish Line that I wanted to enjoy it, I didn’t want to just run through it, I wanted to make it a moment that I would remember my whole life, and that’s what I did.

I raised my arms and just crossed the finish line walking. I was tired and I was in pain (as you can see on the next 3 pics), but I was also enjoying every second of it.

After this I got my medal and a huge blanket that said ‘San Francisco Marathon’ on it, I used it to cover myself from the sun. I didn’t want to bother my friend asking her to pick me up, so I took the Muni. After all, I had just run a marathon, taking the bus back home was an easy task now.

I HAS A MEDAL!!

I’m glad I did, on my way home I still had my medal and my San Francisco Marathon blanket around me. A lady approached me and said I looked like a Super Hero with it, funny thing is, that’s exactly how I felt.

A small side note about the pics. The ‘proof’ sign that some have is because of political reasons in the country that I live on, I don’t have access to buy the pictures online right now. I delayed posting this because I was trying to buy the pictures, but it’s just not possible right now. However when I get the chance I will buy (and post) them, as I really respect the job the photographers did to take them.

I’ve been a real runner for 1 year

“WTH??? Another post that is not the marathon race report???”
I know, I know… I’ll get to that, it’s just that if I don’t post this today, it wont make much sense. There are 2 anniversaries for me today, that somehow relate to each other.

The first one is that 10 years ago my cousin died. He was 18 when that happened and I was 17, he was the brother I never had. He was diagnosed with a very aggressive Cancer when he was 16. Went through chemo, had surgery and had his humerus replaced with a titanium bone. Then it reappeared on his lungs, went through chemo and surgery again. The third time cancer appeared it was everywhere, it was very aggressive, and not much could be done.

Because of this my teen years weren’t what you would call normal. He lived in my house while he was sick, so I was there for everything. While my friends from school were partying and doing whatever teenagers are supposed to do, I was helping him fight cancer. I wasn’t alone at this, we had 2 neighbors who were (and still are) great friends and helped us every moment they could to try and be with him and have a normal life, but it was hard. I’m not complaining though, never have and never will, whatever we went through was nothing compared to what he was going through.

He was a very special person, incredibly strong, never ever complained and tried to be happy and cheerful all the time, even on his last days. Everyone who met him would say he was their best friend. He helped me create really strong bonds with my friends and was the oldest cousin in a big family, so we all looked up to him as our older brother. When he past away he left a huge void in all of our lives.

I dealt terribly with his dead, if I did at all. That day, 10 years ago, I said that I had to take his place, to keep our group of friends together, take care of his brother and my cousins, to try and somehow fill the void he was leaving in our lives. This, of course, was the wrong thing to do. I didn’t had to do any of this, but what does a 17 year old knows about all this? Over the years I did my best to be there for everyone whenever I was needed, to make sure that everyone was alright and moving on with their lives. But by doing this I was not moving on, the truth is that I never made peace with myself and accepted his dead. And many years later I found myself not being who I want to be and not doing what I want to do with my life, I had spent so much time worrying about others, that I never had the chance to worry about myself. So I was lost and had no idea what I wanted for my life.

When I realized that, about 2 years ago, I started searching for an answer, for a path to take with my life. I started with my looks, because I hated the person that was looking back at my in the mirror. Signed up for a gym and started working out. My favorite thing in the gym was running and after a few months I quit the gym to run outside instead of the TM.

This takes me to a run exactly one year ago. It was the 9th anniversary of my cousins dead. By that time I had already run a couple of 10k races and a half marathon, but I didn’t consider myself a runner or anything like that, it was just something that I sometimes enjoyed doing. I decided to go out for a run, no distance goal, pace goal, just a run outside. But something happened that night. I ran for a very long time and thought about my life, where I was going and where I wanted to go. Thought about my cousin and for the first time cried about his dead. I made peace with myself that night. When I entered my house I was a different person, something had changed. Now I know what I want and know that I have what it takes to get it. I still will always be there for my friends and cousins, but I think I can do a better job at that if I also take care of myself. Sometimes you have to look after yourself to be able to look after the ones you love.

That day, one year ago, running changed my life. It made me a different person, a better person. Now I have a different relationship with running and endurance sports, they have become a part of my life, is what I can do when I don’t know what to do, it’s the place that I go to when I can’t find the right answer. That run turned a lost boy with no goal in his life into a man that traveled four thousand miles to visit the place where he was born and run 26.2 miles there. And right now, it feels like I’m just getting started…
